Apollo 18, a sci-fi thriller directed by Spanish filmmaker Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego and produced by Russian director and screenwriter Timur Bekmambetov, centers around NASA's secret mission to the moon in December 1973 which was funded by the US Department of Defense. NASA, however, officially stated that this mission, along with Apollos 19 and 20, were cancelled due to budget and/or time constraints.

Officially, Apollo 17, launched on December 7, 1972 was the last manned mission to the moon and the final lunar landing of the NASA Apollo program. 

Apollo 18 presents film footage supposedly shot by its crew of two American astronauts that shows proof of extraterrestrial life. They find a dead Russian cosmonaut on the moon’s surface, before they are attacked by this alien life.
